Researchers at UPenn have discovered that molecular secretions from gingival stem cells may hold the key to repairing oral tissue injuries. These stem cell secretions possess both regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties that significantly accelerate the healing process. In their experiments with rodents, scientists tested whether the cells could repair damaged tissue by treating tongue injuries. Results showed the tongue not only healed, but it also showed little to no scarring. Building on these findings, the researchers are now planning to work towards developing a gel-based formula from the stem cell secretions that could be widely used to treat oral tissue injuries.
