ADA Requests Input on
Vital Staining Guidelines
for Oral Cancer

The American Dental Association’s Living Guideline Program is inviting dentists, patients, and policymakers to provide feedback on new draft recommendations for the use of vital staining adjuncts in oral cancer detection. This initiative, part of an ongoing collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, aims to update the 2017 guidelines on evaluating potentially malignant disorders. The comment period is open through November 28, with a virtual listening session scheduled for November 24 at
5 p.m. CT. Final recommendations are expected to be published in early 2026.

Study Links Asthma
Inhalers to Increased
Tooth Wear in Kids

A recent study published in Scientific Reports indicates that children and adolescents with asthma who use inhalers are at significantly higher risk for tooth wear, particularly on permanent teeth and buccal/labial surfaces. Researchers found that factors such as the use of dry powder inhalers, higher doses of inhaled corticosteroids, and longer treatment durations contributed to the damage. The authors advise dental professionals to routinely screen young asthmatic patients for early signs of erosion and consider preventive measures like topical fluorides or sealants.
