Bacteria connected to gum disease can cause heart problems

New research suggests gum disease bacteria can cause significant cardiovascular damage, strengthening the connection between oral and heart health,. When these bacteria enter the bloodstream, they trigger heart tissue to become fibrous, substantially increasing the risk of a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation. A study was recently conducted, exposing mice to gum disease bacteria, which found the exposed mice were six times more likely to develop abnormal heart rhythms than the control group. The subjects also showed notable heart tissue complications and damage to their atriums.
