Dentures: More Than Just for Chewing

A Japanese study reveals that adults with fewer than 20 teeth who don't wear dentures face higher hypertension risks in comparison to those who do. Researchers found non-denture wearers had elevated sodium-to-potassium ratios, a known hypertension indicator, potentially because of their lack of ability to chew properly, affecting digestion and nutrient absorption. Beyond preventing hypertension, a study conducted by NYU found that those who wore dentures also experienced a slower decline in cognitive function than those who didn’t wear dentures. These findings emphasize the importance of dentures for overall health maintenance for older adults experiencing tooth loss.
