State Dental Insurance Reforms Continue Momentum In 2026 Legislative Sessions

State lawmakers have sustained a robust effort to restructure the financial relationship between dental insurers and providers during the 2026 legislative session. Over 100 dental insurance reform bills were introduced across 37 states, leading to 21 new laws enacted in 14 states. These reforms tackle structural issues like virtual credit card payments, downcoding, assignment of benefits, network leasing, and dental loss ratios. A key example is Mississippi, which passed a law requiring dental insurers to publicly disclose the percentage of premium dollars spent directly on patient care, boosting transparency for consumers and policymakers.

Down's Syndrome And Hyposalivation: New Insights

Researchers at NYU College of Dentistry have discovered biological mechanisms that may explain the high prevalence of periodontal disease in individuals with Down syndrome, which affects an estimated 60% to 90% of those under age 35. The study identified a defect in calcium signaling that contributes to hyposalivation, or reduced saliva production. This condition can alter the oral microbiome, increasing the presence of bacteria linked to both tooth decay and periodontal disease. Experts hope these insights will lead to new therapies to restore salivation and improve the overall and oral health of individuals with Down syndrome.
