The Top Dental Industry Challenges of 2026

In a recent episode of ADA Dental Sound Bites, Dr. Marko Vujicic, Chief Economist at the ADA Health Policy Institute, identifies a shift in the top challenges facing dental practices for 2026. While staffing shortages remain a significant hurdle for 90% of offices, insurance reimbursement issues and administrative burdens have now overtaken them as the number one concern for dentists. Vujicic also notes that while economic optimism has cooled since late 2024, long-term trends remain resilient: practice ownership is merely being delayed rather than abandoned by younger dentists, and the gender gap in clinical output has effectively closed, with female dentists now working 98% of the hours of their male counterparts.

Gum Disease Germ May
Be Linked to Breast
Cancer

New research from Johns Hopkins University, published in Cell Communication and Signaling, strengthens the evidence for the oral-systemic link by identifying a potential connection between periodontal pathogens and breast cancer. The study found that Fusobacterium nucleatum, a bacterium commonly associated with gum disease, can colonize breast tissue via the blood or mammary ducts, effectively accelerating tumor growth and metastasis, particularly in cancers with BRCA1 mutations. These findings suggest that maintaining periodontal health may be a critical factor in mitigating cancer progression, further emphasizing the need for integrated medical-dental care.
