Fluoridated Water: Safe, Effective, and Backed by Data

A new large-scale U.S. study published in Science Advances tracked nearly 26,820 children from birth through 12th grade and compared fluoride exposure via community water with standardized test scores in reading, math, and vocabulary. The findings showed that those exposed to recommended fluoride levels performed slightly better academically in adolescence and importantly exhibited no cognitive deficits by adulthood. This adds robust evidence that water fluoridation at typical U.S. concentrations remains a safe, effective, and equitable public-health approach to preventing tooth decay.

How Bariatric Surgery Impacts Oral Microbes
and Gum Health

Recent research published in the International Dental Journal indicates that adults undergoing bariatric surgery may face increased risk for dental issues, including gum disease, caries, and halitosis. The study which included human participants and complementary animal models found post-surgery shifts in oral microbial communities along with increased presence of bacteria linked to dental and periodontal disease; in animal models, these shifts were associated with significant alveolar bone loss. The authors emphasize the need for coordinated care between dental providers and bariatric teams to monitor and manage oral-health risks in this growing patient population.
