Bottle vs Breastfeeding: The Impact on Caries

A study published in the Journal of Dentistry examined the effects of breastfeeding on dental caries development. Researchers followed 785 patients, dividing them into two groups: those who were bottle-fed and those who were breastfed for the first six months. At age two, their saliva and dental plaque were collected, and a year later, they underwent a dental examination. Results showed that bottle-fed children were 10% more likely to develop early caries and 6.5% more likely to develop severe caries, likely due to changes in microbial composition. While the study had limitations, it highlights a potential approach to early prevention.

Sustainable Dentistry for a Cleaner Planet

The Sustainable Dentistry Working Group at Semmelweis University recently conducted a waste audit at their education center, where 400 staff serve over 600 patients daily. They found they produce nearly 132 lbs (60 kg) of hazardous waste every day—47% from personal protective equipment and 10% from single-use plastics. The group’s co-leaders emphasize that small changes—like being mindful of glove-use, incorporating reusable material or patients switching to manual toothbrushes—can significantly help reduce waste. With growing awareness and by making conscious choices, these small shifts could pave the way for more sustainable practices across the industry.
